Video Slideshow from the day

On July first 2010 staff from Vicroads attended a 'Virtual Worlds Workshop' at Swinburne University in Hawthorn. The aim of the day was to explore the future potential of virtual worlds. After some initial discussions, participants created 'avatars' and were able to experience life in a virtual environment, exploring, designing, and socialising. They were then able to attend a virtual conference and tour by the CIO of the City of Edmonton in Canada, Chris Moore.

Presenters

Mandy Salomon is a senior researcher with Smart Services CRC, focusing on emergent web practices and their wider implications for the services sector. Mandy is an advocate for virtual worlds and argues that given the rapid improvement in the technology, every public institution should consider having one. Mandy has shared her research amongst a diverse group including theYouth Council of Victoria, Parliament of Churches, Multimedia Victoria, Women In Computing, Asialink, Melbourne Grammar School, X/Media/Lab, Victorian Youth Services, Public Relations Institute of Australia, Online Banking Review. She is associate editor of The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research (Univ Texas).

Dale Linegar is a recognised expert in virtual worlds and has undertaken work for a range of educational organisations in this area. His background is in technology management, multimedia teaching and project delivery. He currently holds positions at Victoria University, Monash University, and Melbourne Grammar School.Dale is the technical manager of the VicHealth-funded 'Connected Lives ' project, following on from his previous role as technical manager for the Avatar Project, also funded by VicHealth. He specialises in “on-the-ground” delivery of projects with young people, including technical troubleshooting, training of young people and mentors, setting up virtual environments and managing contract programmers. His background is in technology management, multimedia teaching and project delivery.

Chris Moore is the Chief Information Officer at the City of Edmonton. In his role as CIO Chris provides vision and leadership over the City’s information and technology direction. Chris hasfulfillment and freedom in his work and as a leader desires to see those around him attain fulfillment and freedom as well. Chris’ office has no “desk” but does have comfortable chairs, creating a welcoming space where conversation is key. Chris has been described astransformational, innovative, disruptive and refreshing. He is an advocate of an OpenEcosystem, Open Gov and Open Data, and desires to see his team embrace innovation, pursuing the possible and building the future together.
